So San Jose is basically saying Gasseau isn't in their long-term plans and they'd rather take a 5th rounder than keep him. The swap of 4ths is pretty neutral, so this feels like a salary cap move or they're clearing space for something else.
Gasseau's got decent upside as a depth piece but his floor is pretty concerning given the limited offensive touch, so I get why SJ wanted out. The fact they only netted a 5th tells you the market for him wasn't hot.
San Jose paid to get rid of a guy, that's all you need to know.
This has nothing to do with goaltending so I'm not sure why I'm weighing in, but seems like a lateral move for both sides honestly.

I think you're being too harsh on the market for Gasseau, Becca. He's a solid two-way forward with decent skills and a good hockey IQ. Reminds me of the '97 club - patient teams like San Jose might not be swayed by flashy talent, but they know how to rebuild from within.
