Free agency thread. Our pending UFAs: Patrick Kane, David Perron, James van Riemsdyk, Cam Talbot. The bigger story is the RFA: Simon Edvinsson needs a new deal and it is going to be a real number, likely north of 8.5 on a long-term, which would actually top Larkin's AAV. Kane will almost certainly re-sign on another one-year if he plays. Let's sort out who we keep, who walks, and how the Edvinsson money fits, especially if there's also a Larkin return on the books. Numbers below.

Kane on another 1-year at ~4 with performance bonuses is fine and likely. The one that actually scares me:

- Edvinsson RFA: arb-eligible? no, but he has all the leverage

- Comparable RD extensions are landing 8.5-9.5 x 7-8

- That AAV would be the highest on the team, yes, higher than Larkin's 8.7

You pay it without blinking. He's 23 and a top-pair guy. But it eats the space Kane/Perron used to occupy.

PAY THE MAN. Edvinsson at 8.5x8 is a BARGAIN in three years when the cap jumps. you sign him LONG and you THANK him. he is the single most important contract on this roster, MORE than any UFA winger we might keep!!!

so the plan is: lose the captain, pay a 23 year old more than the captain made, and re-sign a 37 year old. i'm sure this ends in a playoff series.

Yes? That's how rebuilds work? You pay your young, ascending, cost-controlled core and you let the expensive 30-somethings move on. Edvinsson over an aging winger every single day of the week. This is the GOOD kind of hard decision. 🙏

perron walks. jvr walks. talbot walks. keep kane, pay edvinsson. done thread

nbrennan15d ago

do NOT let talbot just walk without a backup plan. gibson was great but he played 60+ games on a bad team and the wear showed late. you need a real 1B in the room or were right back to a goalie carrying a broken D

^^ this. gibson needs help. dont walk talbot for nothing

Per the beat: the expectation around the league is Kane runs it back on another one-year, term being the sticking point not money. Perron and JvR are likelier to test the market. On Edvinsson, one agent-side whisper has the ask opening at 9x8; the team reportedly wants to keep it under 8.5 long-term. That gap is the most important negotiation of Detroit's summer, full stop.

ask opening at 9x8; team wants under 8.5

That's a very normal opening gap and it lands around 8.5-8.75 x 7 imo. The trick is the bridge-vs-long-term question. With the cap rising fast, Edvinsson should WANT the long-term now and Detroit should want to lock it before he's a Norris finalist and it's 11. Sign it early, sign it long. The patience that helps with Larkin hurts you here.

sign and trade idea:

Wings sign Edvinsson 8.5x8 then trade Larkin to FLA for 9th + Lundell

now PP runs through edvinsson + lundell + raymond

we are SO back

unironically not the worst tj has ever posted 😭 edvinsson QBing PP1 with raymond and a new center is actually a vision i can get behind 🔥

i'll take it. framing this

Kane's a Blackhawk. Always was. Re-signing him a fourth time so he can put up 40 assists on a non-playoff team is the most rebuild thing imaginable. But sure, run it back.

Kane's a Blackhawk. Always was.

this is the meanest thing anyone has said on this forum and i have read the larkin thread 😭😭😭

RR

Reasonable middle ground on the whole summer: re-sign Kane cheap on 1 year if he wants to keep playing here, let Perron/JvR walk to free the term, lock Edvinsson long even if it stings at 8.5+, and use any Larkin cap relief plus the pick to add youth down the middle. None of these are controversial in isolation. It's a coherent plan.

the part nobody on the offense side gets: edvinsson signing long is what lets us play a real first pair and shelter the kids on the bottom pair. you pay him and suddenly the whole d zone coverage scheme has a foundation. its the most important domino for the systems side too not just the cap

quinnr15d ago

pay edvinsson, sign kane, lose larkin, draft a brayden. the offseason in one line

WW

if we keep kane AND pay edvinsson AND get a top 10 pick for larkin i will allow this offseason to exist. but i am NOT emotionally ok and i need everyone to know that

Updating the thread now that Florida's offer is public: if the #9+Lundell deal closes, Lundell's 5.0 cap hit replaces a chunk of Larkin's 8.7, which actually makes the Edvinsson extension EASIER to fit, not harder. The whole offseason hinges on the order of operations, but the pieces fit. Genuinely competent summer if Yzerman threads it.

Larkin's cap hit stays regardless of Lundell's deal, and the math doesn't change the fact we can't afford Edvinsson at that number, period. This isn't about fitting him in, it's about realizing we're outbidding ourselves on our own prospects.

BW

Per Doug G, I agree that we can't afford Edvinsson at the rumored number, but sources say the front office believes Lundell's signing alleviates enough cap pressure to make the extension a possibility. Still, math isn't on our side if we're serious about keeping Kane and Larkin.

I think DetroitTom's got it right - cap math is one thing, but it's about seeing what we're willing to commit to a kid who's still a prospect, and paying him like he's already carrying the team's expectations on his back. Lundell's deal might help out, but I'm not sure it changes much in Edvinsson's favor.

BW

I see RRR making a good point that Edvinsson's value should be considered separate from his cap hit, and I agree that the team needs to be willing to make some commitment to their young players rather than just crunching numbers. Sources suggest Yzerman is open to exploring creative options for roster management if it means locking up Edvinsson long-term.
